Eight High Officials Ride Horses for a Spring Outing, a Later Liang(907.923) painting by Zhao Yan, ink and color on silk, 161.9cm×102cm, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Taipei.
Zhao Yan lived around the tenth century and was a famous painter and collector inthe Five Dynasties(907.960)。 He was good at figure painting.
This painting describes the scene that eight high officials, all of whom wear clothes of red, purple and green colors, ride horses for a spring outing. Because of the Tang style costume, some people believe it is a scene that eight princes of Emperor Taizhu of the Later Liang Dynasty play in an imperial garden. Characters and horses, all with different postures, are scattered orderly, presenting a vivid image.
Only a few of Zhao Yan’s works are handed down to today, so this painting becomes more valuable.
