Baylor University is a private Baptist university in Waco， Texas. Chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas， Baylor is the oldest university in Texas and was one of the first educational institutions west of the Mississippi River. Baylor promotes faith as well as learning， with a wide variety of Christian activities to help students express that faith in a nurturing atmosphere that encourages their religion. Baylor is now a preeminent research university with a distinct undergraduate focus.The university has produced various Fulbright Scholars， Truman Scholars， Marshall Scholars， and Rhodes Scholars. The university has a very high level of research activity for its size. Baylor is also notable for its Law， Business， and Pre-Med programs.

Two of the units are designated as colleges， while eight others are designated as schools：College of Arts & Sciences， Hankamer School of Business， Honors College， School of Education， School of Engineering & Computer Science， Graduate School， Law School， Louise Herrington School of Nursing， School of Music， School of Social Work. Note： Several Baylor graduate programs， including its Law School， Hankamer School of Business and programs in the sciences and education are nationally ranked.
